However, as I walk around the schools and deal with district staff, I don't see unreasonable amounts of waste. I do see lots of very dedicated individuals doing really important work under very challenging circumstances.
I have long been a critic of the lack of clear reporting, and remain so. I realize that the staff at Colborne think they do a good job reporting where the money goes, and I disagree. My biggest beef has been that there is clearly a centralized control at Colborne, yet they claim nearly all the money goes into the classroom; I don't buy it. I would say that 80% of the budget is pretty obvious, but the rest is quite mysterious.
I suppose. There is always room for improvement. But, there are also many things that we should be doing, that we aren't at all, because we don't have the dollars. We must also recognize that as public institutions, schools have a mission to serve everyone, even when at times its not very efficient.
This really is the rub. Since we're talking about a human service, the best way to do it isn't always obvious. That things have started dramatically decentralizing is the main reason I've been rather quiet lately. I do feel that the people who have to make the decisions about how to serve everyone that walks in the door are getting more power to do that, and that's a huge win.
I'm certainly happy with Expo, which I think is just so much better than where I went to school. It still seems expensive per kid, but I can see where a lot of that goes.
