I am an asthmatic and am allergic to cigarette smoke so I strongly support the
smoking ban. Not only for my own health, but because I have known many people
who have suffered from lung cancer and emphysema. One friend never smoked a
day in her life but lived with smokers all her life so I firmly believe in the
danger of secondhand smoke. I do not think smoking is a right, it is a
privilege and should be subject to regulation just as alcohol and other aspect
of business are subject to regulation.
I support Rafael Ortega for Mayor, not just because of the smoking ban issue or
his strong support of transit but because I trust him. He is my county
commissioner and I have found that he is honest and fair. He is more than
willing to take the heat when people disagree with him on issues and always -
in my experience - is willing to articulate the reason he has taken his
position and will listen to the arguments of people who disagree with him. He
has also been very responsive every time I have contacted his office on any
issue. The longest I have ever had to wait for a response was three days and I
even got an apology for taking so long to get back to me. He truly serves the
people in Ramsey County and is genuinely interested in getting feedback and
responses from his constituents. Chris Coleman never responded to me when I
contacted his office. Granted, I was not a resident in his ward, but I am a
resident of St. Paul and his failure to respond to four contacts makes me
question who he is listening to on issues.
