I just had to make some observations in Mr. Repke's
post. You will find them bracketed.
I know that we stray from the City focus on this but
again you are
absolutely
correct on the conservative philosophy. If I run a
bar and water down
the
drinks, to bad let the buyer beware. If I serve
spoiled meat, let the
buyer
beware. If I want to smoke and it makes you ill, to
bad I can do what
I damn
well please. All of these things are regulated
because we live in a
civilization. The purpose of law is to protect those
who need
protection from those who
would exploit or hurt them.
[ Please these things are NOT regulated because we
live in a "civilization". They are regulated because
we live under a system of predatory capitalism. The
success of capitalism, in part, DEPENDS on the
hoodwinking of the unsuspecting public. We don't have
a civilization. If capitalists WERE civil, we wouldn't
need these "protection laws" in the first place. ]
The purpose of democracy is to ensure at
least
some liberties for the powerless, and I am afraid
those who fear
taxation,
regulation and litigation probably can do a pretty
good job of
protecting
themselves.
[We don't live in democracy. We live in a private
sector aristocracy that masquerades as a
representative democracy. Money is a big ol' reason
why we don't have a ban in St. Paul. I suspect that
the "rights issues" are just another republican
distraction.]
The smoking ban that is happening throughout the
country one city and
one
state at a time is a movement of people who are tired
of bullies
deciding there
right to smoke is higher than someone else's right to
breath.
[Why should we have to depend on a movement of the
people? We are suppose to be electing leaders that use
common sense and do what they're suppose to dowhich
is to LEAD US.
A public smoking ban is something that should have
been passed on the simply the basis of common sense
without having to re-evaluated the state constitution.
I would also like to humbly remind you that I do know
republicans and your rightthey ARE bullies! One has
to deal with them the way one always deals with
bullies. Believe me, it's the only way to deal with
'em. Our grandfathers knew that when they took to the
streets in the labor riots of past. It was our
grandfathers and our fathers that got us our rights
and not the military. The local military was on the
side of the aristocratsremember?]
