I am John Harris. I was born in St. Paul and lived there until I moved to Mpls
when i was 30, two years ago. My parents and their parents all grew up in
various locations on the east side. My immediate family still lives on the
east side in the Harding area. I went to Sacred Heart - St. John's, now
Trinity, catholic grade school, Harding High and UW-River Falls, where in my
senior season, we made it to the regionals in baseball. I played hockey for a
couple of years for Phalen playground and Harding area until it became a year
round sport and remember well spending 5 days a week down at Parkway Little
League from ages 6 to 12. I still attend services at Sacred Heart and visit my
family often so I still spend a lot of time in St. Paul. During normal falls,
and winters i spend a minimum of 39 nights downtown attending Wild games and
hope to continue that tradition next season.
I moved to north minneapolis because I worked in downtown there. i was hoping
to get a house that made it a lot more realistic to take a bus to work. I
found that an was promptly let go during a round of downsizing 2 months later.
I know drive to the highland park area doing contract work. Perhaps if things
become permanant i can look for a place back in the old hood. I like it where
i am at. It is a lot like east side. the politics are a lot different and
there seems to be less of a sense of the neighborhood but people are trying.
I don't have a personal interest in the race in st paul but i would be
concerned with property taxes. When i was house hunting, property taxes were
higher in st paul then in mpls (although i expect that gap to close shortly).
it wasn't enough to keep me from buying in st paul but enough to make me take
notice. I know the past mayors are using every gimmick they can to not raise
taxes but if they couldn't and taxes were raised as some would like, I
seriously wonder if they would become prohibitive to young singles or families
from moving in. It is a problem i wouldn't want to have.
I tend to lurk more than post these days. If you haven't figured it out, i am
usually opposite of popular opinion on the board. it doesn't mean i hate
public schools, the poor, the homeless. it doesn't mean i am a rich fat cat
either, far from it. I just have a different idea as to how to solve these
issues. so maybe that means, deep down, I am a lot like everyone on this list.
