There was nothing respectful about this post. I spend a lot of time trying to elevate the level of political dialogue in this city and this kind of stuff is very discouraging. This is the kind of political rhetoric that makes me want to leave the forum.

Lots of people have raised very good reasons in this forum about why they oppose Randy Kelly in the next election. One of them, quite legitimately, was his support for George Bush. I certainly understand how Democrats feel betrayed and expect that many of them will hold this against him in the next election.

However, this is the kind of attack that turns people off to politics and the democratic party.

I guess, I'm just naive enough to believe that there are sufficient issues on which to differentiate the candidates and that as citizens we can find better ways of debating the election than by posting these kinds of insults. I repeat them here for effect:

  * "What a crock of foul smelling effluent!"
  * silly trip he made with Bush, Coleman and Pawlenty
  * "your story's so touching, but it sounds jes'
    like a lie."
  * unless you plan on turning traitor like Zell Miller
    or Norm Coleman
  * to make his deceit seem less treacherous
  * allying yourself with the least qualified, most
    partisan hack to hold office in the last 100 years
    and his two toadies
  * sort of dirty work

Randy Kelly was not the only democrat in the nation to support George Bush. Of course, similar attacks have been waged against Pro-Life democrats. I don't blame any democrat for holding Mayor Kelly's endorsement against him. That's their right. BUT, please don't resort this kind of name-calling, its doesn't serve anyone - in fact it does a real disservice to the democratic process.

Whatever you think of Randy Kelly's endorsement. It was very public and clear, I don't see how one can accuse him of deceit or lying (in terms of the endorsement). Talking about "traitors" is just plain "over the top."

Let's save the accusations of "deceit," "treachery," and "lies" for sins that qualify as such. What we are talking about here is a political endorsement and it doesn't rise to any of the above. Disagree if you will, campaign against him if you like, but please lets try and be respectful about it.

Best wishes,
