Tim -

I'm sure that Gov Pawlenty did have reasons of his own to support the
floodwall. But look at the way it went down in the last few weeks.

* The House didn't put it in their bill.
* Kelly threatened Rep. Hausman that if she didn't support this project, he
would ask Pawlenty to veto all the other St Paul projects.
* The St Paul delegation opposed its inclusion.
* And then Pawlenty goes to Sen Langseth with exactly that threat.

Don't you find it just a little suspicious?

I'm sorry that the press seems not to mind, or find it newsworthy, that Kelly
does business by bullying our Councilmembers, city employees, and
Representatives. I know several people he's done this to, and I not only think
it's a really bad way to govern, but I find it absolutely appalling that the
mayor has consistently threatened to "punish" other lawmakers by hurting their
constituents - who are of course also his own constituents.

What kind of responsible mayor would do that?

Apparently, our Mayor cashed in his chips for supporting >Bush. Is it possible,
just possible - that the Governor had an interest in this project? Or is it
possible, just possible, that the folks who had an interest in this DIKE has as
much influence with the governor or other lawmakers as they supposedly do with
the Mayor?Isn't it possible, that someone else convinced the governor to get
behind this project?I'm always a little dismayed by the simplification that
goes on around certain issues. Judging by discussions in this forum, you'd
think that Mayor Kelly was the one who came up with the idea of the dike,
convinced the business community that they wanted it, convinced the
Metropolitan airport commission that they wanted it, and then convince
 d the
governor that he wanted it.I bet Mayor Kelly just WISHES that he is as
effective as his opponents give him credit for.Somehow, I think that despite
the attitudes in this forum, that there might be a larger constituency for this
airport than people here are willing to admit - and that Mayor Kelly might just
have been ONE of MANY actors behind this project. Now, that might be an EVIL
corporate constituency - but my point is, that there might be a much bigger
group behind the airport than simply Mayor Kelly.NOTE: I'm only responding here
to the claim that the dike is going to be built AS A DIRECT RESULT of mayor
Kelly cashing in his chips. As if that was the only possible scenario. That A
= Mayor Kelly advocated for the dike And B = The Governor eventually pushed
the dike into the bonding bill Does NOT Mean C = That Mayor
Kelly cashed in chips to make this happen. Or even that he was
responsible for making it happen.Maybe it went down
 as Erik
suggests. Mayor Kelly endorses Bush therefor governor supports Dike in St.
Paul. But, maybe its a little more complicated than that - and maybe, just
maybe, everything that happens in St. Paul can't be traced back to the mayor
endorsing Bush. (Not that Erik, or anyone else, suggested such a thing, but it
feels that way from time to time).Call me crazy, but I just don't know......
