As I understand it, Minneapolis has issued an RFP to set up service
throughout the entire city. Details are on the Minneapolis website.
They are looking to get proposals from vendors soon, and will do pilot
projects with competitors late in the year. Their timeline is to award
a contract in early 2006 for implementation later that year (when may
depend upon the bid by the vendor).

Saint Paul is monitoring their RFP process, and I believe City staff
will make recommendations later about next steps as they monitor
progress in Minneapolis and other cities. It's unclear how all this
will shake out in coming months.

The City of Philadelphia will be hosting the "W ireless Internet
Institute (W2i) Digital Cities Convention: The Frontier of Broadband
Wireless Applications" today through May 4, 2005. You can access the
convention site through the Philadelphia site
<http://www.phila.gov/wireless/> .Upon checking the attending cities, I
found neither St. Paul nor Minneapolis. There has been brave talk (or at

least rumors) about creating city-wide broadband access. Perhaps our
city officials ought to be sharp enough to attend to the current efforts

of other cities, which we may be in competition with in the wired
service-oriented future economy of the next 5 to 10 years.
