This was brought up at a recent event, The World Equestrian Games.

I can't think of anything around here that might qualify except US / Canada relations & for the most part that's nothing - Luscombe v. Drouillard spats aside.

well he is setting himself for disaster really ... there seems to be more expatriate New Zealanders than those

that live on the little islands and some of the them are great big rugger players that could well clobber him

I don't think Aussies and Kiwis hate each other ... there is a lot of back and forth lots of shopping in Australia by New Zealanders and trips to the tropics lots of skiing and culture getting in New Zealand by Australians [the Aussie Dollar is much better than the New Zealand one ...

on the international sporting field there is a huge rivalry of course

and there is a New Zealand team in the major Australian league called the Warriors

it used to be that in New Zealand there was a knee jerk inferiority complex regards Australia .. but times have changed ...

they are definitely different places

New Zealand was settled mainly by soldiers from Britain for were sent out to fight the Maori Wars and farmers timber getters and fishermen mostly from the north of England Scotland and Wales

Australia by convicts and the soldier jail keepers and later farmers and businessmen but from the upper echelons of England often the 'black sheep' of the family was sent out to get rid of some kind of scandal

both had a Gold rush in the 19th Century but Australia's was huge

New Zealand is more Pacific Island focused Australia is more Asian

Australia locks up refugees in detention centres surrounded by barbed wire in the desert and lets them drown by the hundreds and talks of a "Pacific Solution" which means

New Zealand makes citizens of them

New Zealand is officially bilingual

Australia has separate language groups

Both have 'race' issues ...

but Maori's have a treaty [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Waitangi ] a place in government via proportional voting and health care

Australian Aboringionals have the 'intervention'

not mentioned in the above article is that whole communities had their [social security ] income quarantined and many self help programmes were disbanded regardless of their success to stop self determination etc in remote communities

Australia is xenophobic and there is a culture of racism that is quite horrific

i am try to think of places in the States that are like Aus and NZ

New Zealand is like San Francisco and the arty part of Arizona [not the desert thing of course]

Australia is like Texas and suburban Detroit

Some buy in Kentucky said they do so he taunts them by saying
Australia & New Zealand are the same country.
        He thinks it is hilarious.
I think it makes him (& me by association) look dumber'n shit.
