Are you SERIOUSLY that ignorant of the history of Quebec (or the history of your own country, for that matter; you might want to look up 'The French and Indian War') ? This isn't a bunch of people who immigrated, then refused to assimilate, this was French colony that was militarily conquered by the English, whereupon the descendants of the original French settlers were routinely and deeply discriminated against until the 50's and 60's. (at least the ones who weren't simply expelled from the country so the English settlers could take their property...<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cajun#History_of_Acadian_ancestors> ) > > In my not-so-humble-view, a very good model of multiculturalism is Detroit in > the 40's and 50's. Schools were segregated, women had few work opportunities outside of the home. The Army was officially segregated until 1948, and was only desegregated by executive order by a 'snotty liberal' president, and only truly integrated until 1951, when the Army conveniently needed black men to go die for their country. And many of them came back from an integrated Army to face serious discrimination back home; this was one impetus for the rapid rise of the Civil Rioghts movement in the 50's; pissed-off black veterans. There were deep societal disaffections rumbling beneath the surface that erupted full-bore in the 60's, and the only reason there wasn't enormous and widespread unrest in the 50's was a deeply repressive authoritarian culture, and that America was widely prosperous: union membership (and the attendant higher wages and good benefits) was at an all-time high, the GI bill had enabled millions of men to get college degrees, along with the concomitant increase in socioeconomic status, and the suburbs were booming, thanks to government-guaranteed mortgages and government-subsidized road construction. Making enough money to live well counteracts a lot of discrimination. Suburbs that often had deeply engrained redlining and sunset laws in place to prevent minorities from moving in. No, you could rely on the white, heterosexual male power structure to make sure no [niggers, spics, wops, polacks, kikes, etc.] got a chance to move into YOUR neighborhood, and if all else failed there was always the anonymous brick with death threats though the front window, police harassment, or burning cross on the front lawn. Man, I knew there was a deep strain of white supremacy in the modern conservative ranks, but I didn't realize just how close it was to the surface. You and the rest of the white male heterosexual protestant conservatives are whimperingly, cringingly, shitting your pants TERRIFIED at becoming a minority in this country, because you're certain you'll be treated just like you treated everyone else... -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Pharmacy Information Technology Group Institutions do not have opinions, merely customs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "StrataList-OT" group.
