ahhh, but we are not a pure democracy, we are a representative democracy, with an added twist that corporate entities can now participate in elections the same as any citizen. That means that those who control corporations, who can wield greater dollars than the average citizen, can control the flow of information to their target voters, thereby manipulating the vote. It helps to follow the money; this is a very simplified graphic chart, which doesn't detail the industries involved. If you added in sources of revenue, it would be a more complex chart, but much more clear in whose hands the tea party's votes are held.

Something that you'll find fascinating as a journalist - the top contenders for GOP/Tea Party candidate for 2012 are all under exclusive contract to Fox. I think that's the first time that one corporate propaganda machine controlled by a multinational has openly employed an entire party in US politics, but I could be wrong.
