It's long been the traditional beginning of the christmas shopping season since 
Thanksgiving is just about a month away from Christmas.

(The Macy's Day parade has been going on since the 20's and is essentially a 
long advertisement. Santa's at the end to remind people to get out and shop) 
and there's been a lot of retail one-upsmanship.
