A good reason to use the password lock on your phone, if it has one. They can search your phone, but if they require you to give them the password, I believe that requires a warrant, like it does for any locked device, like a safe or storage facility. THAT requires probable cause. Of course, since they're cops in modern America, nothing then prevents them from applying a baton or taser warrant to you until you cough up the password.
