Is the battery compartment door on the bottom? Maybe the connection is being
tweaked 'just right' when the thing is on the tripod applying pressure to the
bottom and you press the shutter button?

Just tried putting the mounting/connection doohickey on sideways & still
no go.
Maybe the camera just needs my tender embrace...
