It includes a few videos so you maybe don't need to download everything. (23Mb zipped). You could skip the movies folder for example as that just has USARSim examples in it. I'm just beginning to look at it this morning. So far the important bits seems to be: sumo_patches sumo_unit_tests\autonomous_vehicle The video sumo_unit_tests\free_sumo_demo.mpeg demonstrates exactly the functionality I am trying to achieve. I am happy to start looking at applying these patches to the latest code base. Please let me know if it would be trivial for you, or you wish to change the API etc or whether this fundamentally can't be merged in.
