I love mysteries like this. They are what make research such fun!
There have been several papers in either Bulletin of the British
Sundial Society OR Bulletin of the Scientific Society with analyses
of sundials and other instruments in paintings.
Is there any chance of asking the UM Museum for a colour photo of the
painting, and then scan it and post it on the mailing list??
