I have seen these a long time ago ( in my youth ! ) and you are quite correct in your deductions. I cant remeber what they are called or a source but how about making one? Possibly using a round flask of water. (chemistry lab type round bottomed long neck flask) I suggest this because last summer I was cleaning out a 15gal carbouy and had placed it on a sheet of 1/2inch plywood outside and had filled it with water to rinse, yup, you guessed, I forgot it, the sun came out, burned a track right through the plywood and burned off the grass underneath ! Quite a nice track, a bit short since it was not curved to follow the focus, shame about the plywood. Malcolm.
