Greetings fellow dialists,

Dave Bell suggested that the moon was recently seen at a a suspiciously
high angle in the sky when he came out of a cinema (yes, he said it was
a cinema) near midnight. He guessed it was barely five or ten degrees
off the zenith, surely impossible in his latitude, 37.3N, at midwinter.

It is just possible he overestimated the moon's altitude. A good way to
check on this is to view the zenith in line with the celestial object in
question and then turn through 180 degrees, still looking at the zenith.
This is an excellent recipe for falling over backwards.
