John is correct in his use of port and starboard. These define the sides of
the vessel better than left and right. They are not relative to the
orientation of the individual. Facing forward, towards the bow, with the
stern behind, port is on your left and starboard on your right.

To remember which is which, think POSH. The upper class in the British
Empire sailing to India.  requested berths on the cool side of the ship,
"port out, starboard home" or POSH.

On airplanes, the A seats are on the port side.
