Dear Harold

Irish pillar dials, dating to between 800 to 1200 AD, of which I list
several in my Inventory of Irish instruments, usually follow the octaval
division of the day, indicating, I understand, the times of the morning and
evening prayers which were held at three hours before, and three hours
after, midday.

Regards

Charles Mollan
