Dear Harold Irish pillar dials, dating to between 800 to 1200 AD, of which I list several in my Inventory of Irish instruments, usually follow the octaval division of the day, indicating, I understand, the times of the morning and evening prayers which were held at three hours before, and three hours after, midday.
