Dear Harold, I wont to add news on octaval hours, and that is, that the division of the day in eight parts instead of twelve (not really octaval hours), was alredy known from ancient egyptians. We have a document with prescriptions for construction of sundials. See H. Frankfort, "The Cenotaph of Seti I at Abydos, (Egypt Exploration Society. Memoir xxxix) I. London 1933, pp. 76 - 80.
