I have tried the resist pen. It's OK for positive etching, but has the same
problems as other resists: it lifts off if you try to etch for too long.

For negative etching you need a lot of it if you want to cover an area of
any size. The asphalt seems to be a bit thicker and is easy to spread over a
large area using a brush.
