Thanks for the pictures. This last one pdf sketch demonstrates the rotation 
on the polar axis quite well.

Besides the important new (ok renovated) ideas , this thread has 
demonstrated a couple of points to me.
1. A good question:. A newbie asking a simple good question has provided a 
wealth of interesting responses. Yes, this more that he probably wanted to 
know but we all benefited by the exchange.
2. Size Discipline: Many of us have been frustrated in sharing our ideas 
because of the size filter on this mailing list. your last, but important, 
drawing was just  a trivial 1.48 kb. His excellent pictures were about 15 
kb. The technology is available to produce small files. I am pleased that 
you met the challenge and communicated these concepts effectively. I may 
grumble in the future but thanks Peter, you have demonstrated that it can be 
done.
