>There were found some more erased lines on the vertical dials of the Tower
of the Winds in Athens <snip> I am quite satisfied with by new analysis
till now, but one line opposes. It is a straight line on the southern dial
and goes from the equinoctial line to the date line of the summer solstice
crossing the space of the ninth till the 11th hour. While all the other
erased lines were compensated by new lines this one not. What was the
meaning of that line? I found many explanations but none satisfies me.
Therefore I would appreciate if you have an idea or may help by a
suggestion. If you want I can send a drawing, <

Perhaps you could send me (off list) a drawing of the line that you mean?
Charles Aked in an article about the Tower in the BSS Bulletin 92.3;
October 1992 at p15 shows a rough drawing of the South Dial that he made in
1979. He comments that the gnomons on the Tower were replaced in the
1840s by Palaskas with ones quite unlike the originals and that some have
even been lowered from their original positions. There is an addendum to
this article in BSS Bulletin 93.1; February 1993, p31.
