>There were found some more erased lines on the vertical dials of the Tower
f the Winds in Athens <snip> I am quite satisfied with by new analysis
ill now, but one line opposes. It is a straight line on the southern dial
nd goes from the equinoctial line to the date line of the summer solstice
rossing the space of the ninth till the 11th hour. While all the other
rased lines were compensated by new lines this one not. What was the
eaning of that line? I found many explanations but none satisfies me.
herefore I would appreciate if you have an idea or may help by a
uggestion. If you want I can send a drawing, <
Perhaps you could send me (off list) a drawing of the line that you mean?
harles Aked in an article about the Tower in the BSS Bulletin 92.3;
ctober 1992 at p15 shows a rough drawing of the South Dial that he made in
979. He comments that the gnomons on the Tower were replaced in the
840s by Palaskas with ones quite unlike the originals and that some have
ven been lowered from their original positions. There is an addendum to
his article in BSS Bulletin 93.1; February 1993, p31.
Hallo Patrick, There are no informations that Palaskas had the opportunity to
change some lines. The contrary is right: Palaskas wanted to add
some more lines but it was not allowed to him by the Greek officials. What we
have on the walls of the
Tower therefore is the condition of the 1st century BC.
For those who are able to read German: I have a pdf-file called "Ein
hellenistisches Enigma" on my web www.antike-sonnenuhren.de
that gives the drawing and my ideas on that line.
