Hello Roger, it is not true that only the hours were marked with Greek letters
and not the lines, see f. i. the pictures of Byzantine sundials on my page
http://www.antike-sonnenuhren.de/fotosbyz.htm.
Best wishes, Karlheinz

Hello Darek,

One example that may not be representative is a Greco-Roman Hemispherium
sundial at a museum near Ephesus, Turkey. This sundial has unequal hours marked
with Greek letters, Alpha, Beta, Gamma Delta etc. My pictures in this waymark
gallery show the letters clearly. See
http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM837M_Roman_Sundial_Ephesus_Turkey and view
the pictures in the gallery.

Also note that the hours are marked: first hour, second hour etc, not the hour
lines.

Regards, Roger Bailey

Subject: Greek hour notation on ancient sundials

Dear Dialists

Is there any recognized internet recource on Greek hour notation on ancient
sundials? I only know they had a different (non-numberical) system of hours
marking. Can anyone help me with this?
