I spotted the photo yesterday.
It looks remarkably like a Tony Moss dial plate, but not like a Tony
Moss gnomon.
No doubt he will tell us.

Quite right Mike! The plate is neat but I certainly wouldn't lay claim
to that gnomon. Good ornamental piercing is one of the hardest things
to achieve with a visual balance between the positive elements remaining
and the orifices which bring them about. Look at any good example of
Boule/counter-boule work as in:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=boulle+work+examples&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=oKw&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=np&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=AYEZT52FONDsOci89JkL&ved=0CC4QsAQ&biw=1438&bih=1011
to see what I mean.
My eye just doesn't know where to begin on that example with no obvious
relationship or transition between its positive and negative parts.
Of course there are no fixed rules defining 'beauty' which, 'is in the
eye of the beholder'...or its would-be creator!! so he/she is perfectly
entitled to think how successful it is.
Now let me quickly duck down before the brickbats begin to fly in
response! ;-)
