Oh, I'm not advocating for the design; I'm just trying to get information about examples that are known to exist (my diagram was only meant to clarify what I'm asking about, by showing the shadow lines.)

Yes, two gnomons would also give an overlapping pattern but equally, but why not do the underslung gnomon if the situation called for it - perhaps the wall below a concrete external stairway or buttress or, as someone suggested to me off-list, behind an awning.
