The Solaris vs. Linux vs. OS X vs. FreeBSD debate is painfully symptomatic of what has traditionally hindered Unix -- too many alternatives and too much variation.

I couldn't agree more. Instead of concentrating on adding features or value, a lot of projects concentrate on porting existing apps to different OSes, and OSes to different hardware. My latest gripe is with the current effort to porting opensolaris to PPC. I see very little need for that, especially when they are porting to Apple PPC. While it may be cool for the porters, it adds complexity and maintenance issues. I wish people would concentrate their efforts on better applications, better security and better administration tools. I'll then pick the hardware and OS to suit my needs.

This is an excellent point, but personally I will stand up and cheer when OpenSolaris runs stably on PPC hardware. Why? Macs beat up x86 boxes, take their lunch money, and send them home crying to mommy...much as Solaris does to Linux. To have a G5 on my desk running Solaris would be, quite simply, heaven to me.
