I think what says it best is by going to the Wyse web site...
http://www.wyse.com/products/winterm/
They have 13 different clients whereas Sun basically has three (SunRay
2, SunRay 2FS, SunRay 170). If they need so many there has to be
something going on in the boxes that requires some level of maintenance.
Therein lies the problem, other thin client solutions still require
maintenance on the client where SunRays have absolutely zero maintenance.
The first bunch of SunRays I installed was six years ago and they are as
good as the day they were installed, no maintenance has ever been done
on the client (other than the odd swapout for dead units). There is also
no desire to change them for many years to come (the backend servers
have of course been upgraded). These things have longevity that other
thin clients simply don't have.
The biggest catch there is with SunRays is understanding their
limitations, there are some functions that don't work well or at all
with SunRays (i.e. some digital cameras and other peripherals). These
extras are generally not used all day every day so it is often
appropriate to have a media workstation available (say on each floor of
an office) that has a DVD/CD writer, Scanner, firewire ports, USB2 ports
etc for any unique requirements. This can be a culture shock for some
people not having EVERYTHING available to them at THEIR desk but it can
easily be managed especially when they notice the trade off is to have a
perfectly silent client rather than a hurricane inducing PC.
The other beneficial factor is power consumption. I don't think any
other thin client matches the new SunRay2 for power consumption of only
4 Watts rather than the 17W of most Wyse devices. At only 13W savings
you aren't going to save a fortune on power but it is just another
contributing factor to device longevity not to mention if you are
running a critical environment (like a call center) where you have the
clients running off UPS all those Watts quickly add up.
Cheers, Rob.

Its depend on your requirement actually. What best from sun ray
compare to other Thin Clients (Wyse and Smarflex LTSP - I will not
talk about web base access since its totally different):
1. No Local OS and No Local Configuration - Not at all
Sun Ray using DHCP to connect to Sun Ray Server. All setting and
resource only done in server. Advantage : EVerythING will be
centralised. Disadvantage : Need bigger server resources compare to
other thin client.
2. Secure:
This also the best from sun ray. I think this is one of main reason
sun ray is used in army. But then you also have the concequency of it
3.Session Mobility
This is very nice feature of sun ray. This always work for customer on
Demo :)
4.Color and Audio Quality : OK
I have compare with rdp client from windows PC and the color is much
nicer. Never had chance to try wyse and LTSP.
All those stuff is sales thing. If you dont need those feature, dont
go to Sun Ray.

I'm looking at the Windows thin client market and wondering what
is the best choice of a thin terminal architecture?
-Sunray
- Wyse
- SmartFlex LTSP?
- Web base access
The primary application would be access to MS office and Outlook/
Exchange. (Please don't try to talkup JDS etc. It's out of scope
for now).
Does Sun have a marketing position on this?
Thanks
