I don't think setting up a dedicated interconnect is really necessary.
I have upgraded several 1.x versions of DTU firmware by simply plugging
the DTU into the same network segment as the server.  The DTU unit
shouldn't be able to tell the difference between a dedicated
interconnect and a shared interconnect as long as you are on the same
segment and not using any additional port settings on the switch such as
VLAN tagging.
