I don't think setting up a dedicated interconnect is really necessary.
I have upgraded several 1.x versions of DTU firmware by simply plugging
the DTU into the same network segment as the server. The DTU unit
shouldn't be able to tell the difference between a dedicated
interconnect and a shared interconnect as long as you are on the same
segment and not using any additional port settings on the switch such as
VLAN tagging.

That's correct - it only has to be connected to the same broadcast domain
as the Sun Ray server, which means a local subnet would work. You could
even use VLAN for this.

Rats - I just remembered. You also have to supply all the Sun Ray parameters from the Sun Ray server. That's probably why somebody suggested interconnect,
since that always is configured in this way.

It won't work to attach the Sun Ray to the local subnet if your local subnet
DHCP server is not the Sun Ray server itself. Very old firmware needs to get the
AuthSrvr parameter along with the basic network parameters (i.e. address) in
order to boot up, and probably needs the FWSrvr and NewTVer parameters in
order to upgrade the firmware. It was only in SRSS 2.0 that we introduced the
ability to get Sun Ray vendor parameters separately from network parameters.
