I acquired a Sun Ray 1 (380-0299-01). This unit does not have a normal serial number. It's serial number is DVT-070. I was wondering if any one could tell me if it was beta hardware or just fell under a different numbering scheme. I flashed the firmware and it works great. It just looks cosmetically a little different and comes apart different than the
other 1's I have.

It's a Design Verification Test sample of the second-generation
Sun Ray 1. So yes, it's beta hardware. I doubt that Sun would
do anything under warranty for a DVT unit that somehow escaped
from Sun or from a beta customer but the warranty on a production
unit would have expired by now anyway. The final production
units might have been different in minor ways but it should work
just like any other Sun Ray 1.

Some of Sun's "internal" machines that leaked out into the wild are really neat. A friend of mine has a pair of pizza box chassis marked "SPARCstation-3" which look suspiciously like SPARCstation-10s...apparently the name was changed late in the design cycle.

I have an Ultra1 with PCI slots instead of Sbus slots. It otherwise looks identical to a standard Ultra1. The machine seems great all around; I'm surprised Sun didn't sell them.
