Just to follow up on all this:

I run Feisty with the most recent SRSS 4 beta.

It was not possible to get backspace/space to work under GDM with the
default Feisty setup. Renaming xmodmap didn't help at all.

I installed the xkb-legacy-data package (which uninstalled the xkb-data
package, gnome-panel and a lot of other gnome packages) and that seemed
to do the trick completely.

We use gdm to manage the displays, but we do not use the gnome desktop
as such (people run xfce, fluxbox/twm or kde).

Under GDM the keyboard works (including space and backspace).

Under whatever GDM starts (kde/xfce/...) the keyboard works perfectly
fine as well.

So, right now, I am a very happy camper with SRSS and Feisty - it works
for all practical purposes so far (and thunderbird/firefox work as well
as they do not depend on gnome panel/applets that depend on the xkb-data
package that doesn't work with SRSS) :)

I'm testing the beta with real users now.
