I was also disappointed when I found out I couldn't run SRSS within a zone. We all know the benefits of virtualization, and next to hardware partitions, Solaris zones are the most efficient way to virtualize. There are always cases when the amount of SunRay users smart small, and slowly over time have users migrated to SunRays. So the need to buy hardware that won't be fully utilized for many years can often make no sense. Zones can make much more efficient usage of your hardware.

Also the ability to copy zones to other hosts, this alone is a very powerful feature. (Migrations to new hardware down the road? Adding another server into the FOG? Opens new backup strategies?)

Then there are always odd cases... When I first wanted to try Solaris in a zone, a SunRay implementation needed to serve CAM users, JDS users, and also wanted the hardware redundancy. I realize this wouldn't be an issue in the new software, but to meet this requirement they needed 4 hosts, and the hosts running the CAM users would be severely underutilized.

Problem was I only had 2 hosts to work with, so I even tried making a 'desktop zone' on each SunRay server, and using Xnest through CAM for the JDS users. Performance was awful, and text on the login screen was missing half the time. So in the end I had to lose the redundancy, one CAM host, one JDS host. Zones would been great for this scenario. Zones also have extensive scheduling and priority control, so you could be sure the desktop users don't grind the server to a halt.

Maybe it's just me, but I think SRSS inside a zone gives people a lot more flexibility, and it would be a supported way of doing it. You know people are using 'other' methods anyway. ;o)

Ive heard that you cant use Zones with a SunRay thin client. Is it planned?

A better list for this question would be to the Sun Ray Users Group
([email protected], register at http://filibeto.org)
but I'm happy to have caught this. I hope you don't mind my
CC'ing them so that interested folks can join in.

There are so many possible uses of Zones with Sun Ray that
such a generic question can't be answered easily. In SRSS 4.0
we started using the labeled-zones model of Solaris 10 Trusted
Extensions, so in one sense we're using Zones today. Some
people might like to run SRSS within a Zone (e.g. for a
service provider), some might like users to be logged into
Zones in some fashion (either individually or via some grouping).

We need a good business case to staff an effort to do anything
here. What exactly would you like to do with Sun Ray and Zones?
