Nearly everything at Sun but Sunray has been open sourced, which
allows
the community to expand the efforts of the internal developers in
multiple directions. With so many things needed and so few internal
resources, I really can't understand why Sunray is the hold out.
Yes. Don't we all remember the hype around
<http://www.sun.com/smi/Press/sunflash/2005-11/
sunflash.20051130.1.xml> ?
I thought about this for a while and discussed it with some friends.
I am a scientist and sysadmin without any business background, so
please
be patient if I got everything wrong or missed the obvious,
but here are some of my thoughts:
I don't think it would be wise for Sun to open-source SRS, at least not
until almost all Linux and Windows boxes on this planet have been
replaced with Solaris machines. :-)
I consider Solaris, SRS and SGD to be the crown juwels of Sun. This
tech combo is so advanced that it forces customers to purchase and
install Solaris servers which is good for Sun. I at least see no
alternative for Sun Rays and SGD anywhere on the market if you want to
deploy Unix (Solaris) based enterprise applications. This braught us
even so far that we are currently replacing Macs (known to be the OS
with the best and most efficient UI) with Sun Rays (definitely worse UI
[GNOME, Window Maker,...] but we gain all the advantages of ultra thin
clients and deployment over the internet). We pretty much like the idea
of open software (less vendor dependencies), but in this special case
we can live with the current situation. I would rather like to use a
closed-source SRS than seeing Sun going out of business, and I consider
this decision critical for the survival of Sun.
If you want to use SRS, install Solaris! :-) I recommend Sun to invest
their resources in improving audio/video capabilities of SRS, making it
run in Solaris zones and may be a MacOSX connector rather than
"wasting" time on making it run on the dozens of Linux distros on this
planet. Just my 2 cents...
Regards,
Andreas
