Is there some other mechanism to hint the WM at window placement?
Even if there was, providing the XINERAMA extension information would (I
imagine) be supported by the most WMs and would be the most useful.
From your comments, I gather, that if I want all the convenience of Xinerama
(window placement hints, proper maximise, etc. etc.) I cannot get that on the
2FS.
The easiest solution we've found is not to buy the 2FS, at this point.
We have one 2FS unit (that we used to test the dual head functionality)
but it is (now) paired with a 2 on the second display so that the server
software will present the XINERAMA extension information and we can get
the smart maximising and dialog box centering, etc.
Also, if you have a 2FS (2-way 1280*1024 multihead, for example) and
then in another terminal group you have the same 2*1280*1024 logical
screen space but presented as a multihead group of two separate units
(SR2, SR1, whatever) then session mobility doesn't work especially well.
If you start the session on the 2FS then when taken to a 2-unit group
your 2560*1024 session pans around but only on the first display. Start
the session on the 2-unit group and take it to the 2FS and it will
appear just on the first display of the 2FS and you'll need to screen
flip with the mouse.
At least, this is how it worked for us during testing -- I'd love it if
we had just missed something.
I'm wondering - the X server is where Xinerama happens... I would think
(without being an X developer) that it would be simple, to hint the X server
about the layout on the 2FS, thereby getting full Xinerama and thereby proper
hinting to the window manager.
Hopefully it is a feature that will be implemented in the future, along
with the ability to treat a 2FS and a pair of 2's both with the same
display configuration as the same type of multihead "group."
