Hi,

A lot of newer software (for example firefox 3) relies on having the
RENDER extension available on the X-server. When it's not available it
tries it tries to compensate for it which results in high network
traffic, as it copies a lot of data back and forth. When running the
software locally you don't really notice this, but you sure do when
running it over remote X.

What i understand is that this behaviour is dependent on the underlying
graphical library used (firefox 3 uses libcairo). Maybe some older
libraries don't need RENDER, and are still quite efficient over remote X.
