Maybe because he is not using Centos 5.1 but 5.2 or 5.3 and Sun GDM broke 
dependencies, and the installer check the gdm as valid. 
I had the same problema installing SRSS 4.1 on a Centos 5.2, and end up 
installing Centos 5.1 (i had 1 DVD iso on my backup).
