Hello everyone from the list,

It's my first attempt to answer a question (read a lot to learn things about the Sun Rays), so forgive me if I'm repeating another one.

I've just setup a CentOS 5.2 (x86_64) and ran into the same problem than Nadeem Ahmad : X keeps crashing.

The logs for gdm and the X server that it starts is in /var/log/gdm/:xx.log, with "xx" being the display number started. Sun Rays normally start at 10.

In my case, I had messages like this one :

/opt/SUNWut/lib/Xnewt: error while loading shared libraries: libXfont.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

It seems that the default install of CentOS 5.3 does not install libXfont, you can install it with a :

yum install libXfont

And that solved the problem for me.

Hope this helps,

Didier.

Actually, with SRSS 4.1 we only use Sun's GDM with SLES 10, not with RHEL 5. The RHEL distro shipped a version of GDM that was sufficiently recent as to pick up the changes we pushed to the main branch to support dynamic display creation (I think the SLES version had that change as well but it had some other significant bug so we deemed it better to continue to use our own version in that environment).

It is true however that we've only tested with and support RHEL 5 Update 1, not Update 2.

You could first use a supported distro (or binary equivilent), then use the Sun Ray provided GDM as others don't always have the necessary fixes to allow it to run multiple instances of gdm at once. Either that or wait for an answer from someone who has got it working on an unsupported version of a binary compatible version of RHEL 5.1, which would be CentOS 5.1, not 5.2.

Why aren't you running the Sun provided GDM?
