Thank you for the info, James.

Today, I was ultimately and consistently successful in printing to the
Datamax E-4204 and Sun Ray Server 4.1 but at this point in time I would like
to commit only the following:

I set up lpr.debug in /etc/syslog.conf to output to a file in /var/tmp and
used the log to find out that the Datamax E-4204 is represented by a
different file under /tmp/SUNWut/units/IEEE802.<mac address>/dev/printers
when attached without a USB-to-parallel converter than when it is attached
through its USB interface. The de-spooler was therefore unable to de-spool
to the file indicated when creating the printer under Solaris Print Manager.

I re-created the printer using the new file information as the output port
and was successful.

I also made some other modifications but will not post back yet as I need to
grasp all the settings better first.

Cheers,

Etienne

Subject: Re: [Bulk] [SunRay-Users] Printing to Datamax E-4204 label
printersfrom a Sun Ray 270

Hi Etienne,

I had a similar requirement last year and found it much easier to attach a
networked belkin print server ( with a parallel to USB converter) to the
datamax label printer. My understanding is that true USB redirection will be
included in the sun ray server software in the next couple of months . A
sales guy at Sun estimated USB redirection by August although that was
before the Oracle announcement.

Good day,

I'm getting to grips with the entire Sun Ray infrastructure and doing
reasonably well except with the matter of printers attached directly to the
Sun Ray device.

***Configuration notes***
1. Non-PostScript printer (Datamax E-4204) attached directly to the Sun Ray
DTU. I have used both its parallel- (via parallel-to-USB adapters) and its
USB-interfaces.
2. Sun Ray Connector for Windows OS running in a kiosk mode session
3. Use of uttsc -r 'printer:<print queue name>=<Windows printer driver
name>' in the kiosk mode configuration to send a Windows TS session to the
DTU

***Issue***
While ... the print queue shows properly in the Windows session.
And ... the jobs spool to the print queue (as witnessed by lpq <print queue
name> on the Sun Ray server)
.... jobs de-spool to the parallel-interfaced printers only sporadically,
remaining in the queue. They de-spool to USB-interfaced printers but do not
print out at all.

***Troubleshooting***
svcadm restart print/server:default
lpc disable <print queue name>; lpc enable <print queue name>

...but these troubleshooting steps have not been successful.

I note the posting at
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg09715.html. I
assume that this refers to the configuration item on the Windows printer and
will be trying this out tomorrow.

Can anyone share his/her experience in this situation?

Sincerely,

Etienne
