are there any best practices on how to *UPGRADE* an existing Ubuntu
9.04+SRSS 4.1 with 9.10+SRSS4.2 ?
Is it necessary/advised to completely uninstall SRSS 4.1, de-apply all
modifications and patches prior to Ubuntu/SRSS upgrade?
Any real life experiences welcome... ;)

Craig: I believe that Jacques-Olivier refers to an unsupported installation
of SRSS on an Ubuntu server. In the last couple of years, USB worked quite well
for SRSS on Ubuntu/Debian. I also think he refers to the wiki at

Jacques-Olivier: I am the guy who wrote most of the "SRSS on Debian" stuff
on the wiki. At the moment I am quite busy and can't play with SRSS4.2
before January. But some weeks ago I installed an "SRSS4.2 early access 1"
on Debian without bigger problems.
I would guess that SRSS4.2 on Ubuntu 9.10 will work following the same steps
as for SRSS4.1 on Ubuntu 9.04. Start with installing the legacy gdm package:
"apt-get install gdm-2.20"
(The newer gdm does not yet work with SRSS). Also, have a look at this bug:

I assume that you understand that all this stuff with SRSS on Ubuntu/Debian/...
is community work, totally unsupported by and independent of Sun.
But it's fun when it works!
I just want to come back on the above matter and let everyone know that
my "SRSS 4.2 on Ubuntu 9.10" HOWTO guide is finally ready and we have
applied it to multiple server here already. So have a look at the
