I think only parts are in Java. Other parts are in shell, which is also platform independent, but there are also kernel modules and non-portable binaries (i.e. compiled C/C++). The distribution for Solaris SPARC/x86 is the same but the installer never installs all the packages included on any given machine; i.e. the distribution includes more than one complete set of packages.
