Subject: hmm. Faith in Sunscreem?
Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 14:32:08 +0100
Hi All,
We'll as the found of this sunscreem mailing list - you'd think I'd =
comment a little more often than what I do - but the truth is I've been =
quite happy to sit back and read the postings of late.
The truth is, up until to day I thought my Sunscreem days were over.=20
I fell in love with Sunscreem in 93 and I did more than the average =
"fan" for them up until about 2 years ago - when I let my website and =
mailing list input practically dissapear.
I think half the problem is than Sunscreem - just seemed to disappear =
from among us. They stopped releasing stuff, the web-site seems to be =
more about other countries than UK, and the releases were all on =
different labels - all lacking that Sunscreem energy which we all love.
To be honest my personal music taste may have changed - I now listen to =
the likes of BT, Paul Van Dyk, Art of trance, etc, to name but a few - =
and until about a year ago I kinda felt guilty that I dont put CoD or =
NDT on the Cd player anymore.=20
What I think Sunscreem missed was the oportunity to lead the way on the =
current "Trance" sound that is very much in dominance. Some songs spring =
to mind...
System F - Out of the blue (probably the leader of the pack)
PVD - For an angel
Chicane - Saltwater
Art of trance - Madagaska
(Anything on a gatecrasher CD)
You get the idea - the "epic" trancey euro banging stuff. This is what I =
call "large" stuff. I think that if the band had not been busy in other =
countries they would have realised that a great deal of what they have =
done in the past would easily be remixed by the big names now - and =
Sunscreem would be a household name again.
However - saying all that - I picked up a copy of Exodus 99 today and to =
my surprise I've found that they have gone Large! The Fire and Ice mix =
is large! Building progressive stuff with a nice break in the middle.
I cant help but feel though that it has all come a bit to late. Even the =
most reputed of DJ's and Producer's would have a job naming a Sunscreem =
track now - and I feel they are going to have to work very very hard to =
regain their place in the UK dance market.
Now - Exodus 99 isn't really that good. I mean you wouldn't even compare =
it to the origonal - which was good! It's a different thing altogether - =
just using the odd sample or two.=20
I dont know about you lot, but I always thought that Suscreem greatest =
records were the most commercial Pressure Us, Perfect Motion, When - so =
why are they still pushing the more "diverse" remix and the like. I felt =
a moment of excitment today when I saw the cover for Exodus 99, but a =
great disappointment when hearing it.=20
Yes - it's a large tune - but I doubt I will ever hear it in any of the =
clubs I work in - and we had Judge jules 4 weeks ago, Dave pearce 3 =
weeks ago, Scott Bond last week, Danny Rampling last wednesday, Tall =
Paul in 3 weeks and Boy George on Sunday.
Sorry - if it sounds like I'm showing off here - but my point is that =
non of the big big name DJ's are going to play this track. And that can =
only mean low sales for Sunscreem - further de-moralisation for the =
band, and even less consistency of material released.
I just wish the whole thing could start over again. All the crap about =
copyright could go - and the older classics - get the update and =
mainstream treatment that they deserve.
At the end of the day - I WAS sunscreem's no 2 fan (sorry - got to hand =
it to Adam on that one!) and now I only buy the releases to make sure my =
"collection" is kept complete - for the day I sell it.
grim
Comments please - esp Thicket, Matthew K, Adam, Joost, Neil F, Chris K - =
some of you are still here - where are the rest of you guys? You feeling =
the same way as me?
Rob
