It's called ESD.: Electrostatic Discharge. The smallest amount can render
and RAM completely useless. A recommended buy in the future is and ESD strap
that can connect to the grounded power supply of your computer (while it is
still plugged in or the grounded port of your electrical outlet. You can
never be to careful. In addition to that - any time I touch the inside of a
computer (even just for tapping and peeking or cleaning the dust balls out)
I always touch the power supply to discharge any electricity (even while
wearing an ESD strap). Second is to put an ESD mat that lays on your desk to
place ESD sensitive components (like memory) on them during installation.

Sometimes you do not even need to physically touch a computer component to
have an ESD charge render it useless.
