Alan as always, the cool head.

If all you do is photoshop work, you don't have much of a choice
<grin>. I'm using the beta right now, and it's flaked on me once, but
all I do is optimize for web or edit frames for movies. I really don't
work heavy on the beta yet.

As far as "new features" here's the misnomer. Apple has built a new OS
primarily out of known parts (save Aqua/Quartz). There's no real
overwhelming feature set to induce you to change, other than better use
of the underlying hardware in some instances. My gripes with OS X are
limited to overall speed (I still think you need a g4 for daily use) and
Carbon or Classic application support. I find that Carbon apps (and
part of this is because most carbon apps are OS 9 apps to begin with)
don't thread very well. So I see a spinning "black and white" too much
with IE5, MS Office, and Golive. I've got a gig of RAM so the machine
sure isn't paging. Some Classic apps work well, some just don't for me.

OS X is more of a "moving forward" step, get on board as soon as your
business case makes sense so that we can provide you with world class
functionality in the future. Right now there are transition issues that
most users will forget about in 5 years (I say that to the UMAX mailing
list, LOL as I look at my c600 who is functional as an MP3/ FMPro
server, but long in the tooth for things like. web surfing), like speed
with g3s or use of Carbon/Classic applications.

It's kind of silly to even discuss X in this forum, as most people here
are happy or even proud they are using 3rd of 4th generation technology,
and tend to get upset with Apple when a UMAX clone doesn't support the
latest and greatest technology. There's a point at which THAT sort of
zealotry becomes absurd. As an example, Nancy told that guy with
essentially no legacy issues to worry about NOT to buy a g4, but to
spend money on upgrading a used UMAX. In her case, it sounded like she
had legacy peripherals that her new iMac wouldn't work with. But this
guy had a Win2k box to use as a print server, with the printer being
essentially the only piece of hardware that he had to co-exist with. So
2 years from now when he buys a new Palm, iPod, Scanner, external hard
drive, whatever, how's he going to hook those up to his UMax with an
inferior processor? Buy 3rd party firewire and USB cards? And if
you're really into using a machine for 5 years to get your maximum
utility, does it make sense to buy a machine that will then be 10 years
old?
