And if you're really into using a machine for 5 years to get your maximum

Hi, Alexander -

With apologies to a huge chunk of your reply missing -
I couldn't agree with you more.
I have a friend who is a Photoshop power user and has generated obscene amounts
of $ from his images.
(He is one of the top stock shooters in the country.)
He started out with a 8500, then upgraded it to a Newer Tech 450/G3.
That machine became dedicated to a drum scanner when he bought a 450mhz
Sawtooth.
Recently he got a G4/733 before all the new stuff came out.
With the type of work he does with huge files, not sure if his need for speed
will ever be satisfied.
With someone like him, money is well spent when something faster (and I'll be
darned...CHEAPER) comes along.
Then there are folks who can't expense out equipment purchases, such as
myself....
Although a lot less then when Apple was the only game in town, a good chunk of $
was dropped when the S900 and perpherals were bought new in 1998. And I couldn't
be more pleased that I've been able to make incremental upgrades to the OS and
hardware without going hog-wild or buying a newer machine.
At least on the hardware side, a handful of the stuff will be able to migrate to
a newer G4, which has been a major consideration with my purchasing decisions
lately. Having needed tons of storage space, last several purchases have been on
internal IDE drive and external Firewire HD.
Yes, at some point it's time to move along and stop spending on old technology
and my turn will come.

My cousin told me during my bachelor days; "You'll know when your time comes" to
get married.
Sure enough, without forcing it, that's what happened.
I hope to apply the same thing with a new Apple - and I'm one of these people
who drive cars until some idiot smashes into them.
('85 Volvo with 270,000 miles and still looking new and going strong. '71 VW bus
with 93,000 miles and a '81 Benz 300SD with 200,000 miles, ready for another
200,000 miles.) Not quite the same with computers, but you get the idea.

(Hmmmm.....Where is that new MacMall catalog that just arrived ??? :-)

Alan
