I did it the following way, but unfortunately it requires you to already be running OS X, as it uses the OS X Disk Copy. I seem to recall that the original instructions said that Toast under 9.x wouldn't work to make the image file from the 10.1 CD, but perhaps that has changed by now? If so, skip the following paragraph. Boot up OS 10.1. Insert your 10.1 "Upgrade" CD. Start up OS 10.1's Disk Copy - the OS 9.x version won't work. From the Image menu choose "New Image From Device". This brings up a "Device Selector" window with entries of "disk1", "disk2", etc. Click on the triangles to open them up. You're looking for the one that says "CD_ROM_Mode_1". Select it and click the Image button at the bottom. This brings up the "Save As" dialog box. Type a file name that ends with a ".cdr" extension and click the "Image Format" drop down button. Choose "DVD/CD Master" and click the Image button again. If you left the default extension of ".dmg" on the file name, an error message will come up saying that you can't save this image with a ".dmg" extension and that it should be ".cdr". Choose whatever option you want and let it rip. Once you have the image file, mount it and drill down to System\Installation\Packages. Control-Click on Essentials.pkg. Choose "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu. Drill down to Contents\Resources. There you will find a file alled "CheckForOSX". Delete it. Now un-mount the image and burn it. In my case - since my only CD-RW is on my Windows PC - I copied the file over to the Windows machine and burned it using Nero. I've heard that WinOnCD can burn Mac images also, but I have no direct experience doing that. I *do* know that Nero version 5+ works fine. I've successfully burned many Mac CDs using Nero on Windows. For those that have burners on their Macs, I *think* you have to use the OS 10.1 built-in CD burning software (iTunes? iDVD? iWhatever?) to burn the image. Again, I don't know if Toast can do it. Perhaps someone else can chime in here with Toast experience? Good luck!
