Thank you for the suggestions, Nancy.   Actually, I thought of this 
one, but the thing that my original message probably didn't make 
clear is that there is no way to implement it.  When I choose Sharing 
in the Get Info box, I just get the message that I quoted before and 
it won't let me into the Sharing window.  So there was no way to turn 
off sharing for that volume and then turn it back on, because I was 
blocked out of the window that controls those functions.

But, as I wrote in my previous message, TTP seems to have cleared up 
the problem.   On the other hand, it also says that my drive is 
failing its self-test diagnostic and found more bad blocks.  I fear 
the hardware is failing.  On the gripping hand, the volume in 
question is on a three drive RAID, so perhaps TTP doens't handle 
diagnostics properly for that situation.  If it is accurate it'll be 
a pain to figure out which drive is causing the problem.  It's 
frequent backups for me for the next however long it takes to resolve 
this.
