Can't hurt to try, go for it.
Did you have any other web browsers loaded (Navigator, iCab etc.) that might
have a similar bookmarks file? If so, you could export it back to an
Explorer Favorites file. If Explorer was your everyday, or only, web browser
I realize it would be the main collector of your most visited sites though.

I know it sucks to lose important data, but it's just such an event that
caused many of us to do regular file backups. Even just backing up the Prefs
folder is a good start. I've lost entire hard drives without a backup, it's
mind numbingly annoying. But never again I tell ya.
