We had a lot of small storms go through in middle to late June. They
caused five or six outages. Our biggest problem has been a recent (10
days) of unseasonably hot weather. So, we are getting brownouts in our
neighborhood. (old houses, old neighborhood with equally old electrical
service) The returning power, and the spikes they create are probably
my biggest fear.

We have not had any failures while I was using the computer. If I can
get ten minutes of backup power, I am happy. For any number of reasons,
I might not be sitting in front of the computer in any outage. And, we
are talking about working in the dark. Belkin now has a automatic
shutdown software that works on a Mac. It uses USB and works with OS
9.0.4 and higher. It only works with their UPS units though. I can't
comment about its effectiveness, as I did not install it.

That APC 1100 PRO I got at the special clearance price is at the shop.
It covers the iLamp, a cash register, a credit card machine and a
phone. The electrical service in that part of the neighborhood is even
worse than home. If I shut down the iMac, the big UPS allows me to
continue doing business in an outage. We had emergency backup lighting
installed too. I got really pissed when we had a three hour power
outage the Friday before Christmas.

Sorry to say that clearance pricing on the big APC units is history. We
looked for some. We ended up buying two Belkin 1200VA units, one for
the 600 and one for the 9600. A couple of small units will back up
printers, scanners, etc.
